Consultant Metallurgical Investigation of Failed Wood Drill - Example Report LPD Lab Services received a failed wood drill bit for examination and metallurgical failure investigation. The part was representative of a series of similar field failures and customer returns associated with complaints. The drill bit was said to have bent whilst being used to drill into relatively soft wood and other manufactured parts had suffered similar symptoms. This report discusses the results of optical microscopy, SEM/EDX analysis, hardness and metallographic assessment performed on the drill bit. The purpose was to understand why the drill bit failed as well as offer options for process improvement and optimisation to minimise the chance of reoccurrence of the failures. In early November 2016, Dr S. Romani from LPD Lab Services was invited to speak as a RAPRA Preferred Provider and Partner as well as Foundation Member in the Aerospace section of the Advanced Engineering Show 2016, a conference and exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham. The presentation covered Industrial Problem Solving and Failure Investigation of modern materials including an introduction to LPD Lab Services activities, a brief history of composites use, polymer degradation and failure, delamination in composite products, how to approach failure analysis problems, a failure analysis air crash example, case studies and a summary of effective problem solving.
In the last week of November 2013, Dr S. Jenkins from LPD Lab Services was invited to speak as a RAPRA Preferred Provider and Partner (PSP) at the Composites Engineering Show 2013, as part of the Advanced Engineering conference and exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham specifically for composite materials. The presentation covered Technical Industrial Problem Solving and Failure Investigation in composite systems including issues with mechanical properties, delamination, shrinkage issues, and particulate contamination. Technical Industrial Problem Solving and Failure Investigation Presentation at Mediplas 2013 In the last week of September 2013, Dr S. Jenkins from LPD Lab Services was invited to speak as a RAPRA Preferred Provider and Partner (PSP) at Mediplas 2013, a conference and exhibition at the NEC in Birmingham specifically for plastics used in the medical devices and pharmaceutical industry. The presentation covered Technical Industrial Problem Solving and Failure Investigation in paint coatings, plastic and polymer systems. |
